Bishop Benziger College of Nursing, Kollam, Kerala is a Unit of Bishop Benziger Hospital Society. It is a charitable society under the Diocese of Quilon, which opened an avenue of health care service to the people since 1948.Under the leadership of Rt. Rev. Dr. Paul Antony Mullassery, the Bishop of Quilon, the diocese runs many aided and unaided institutions in educational, health care, social services, and pastoral sectors.

Bishop Benziger College of Nursing, Kollam founded in 2004 by the then Bishop of Quilon Rt. Rev Dr.Stanley Roman, is a Christian minority educational institution. The college is approved and recognized by Indian Nursing Council (INC) and is affiliated to Kerala Nurses and Midwives Council (KNMC) and Kerala University of Health Sciences (KUHS). The College offers B.Sc. Nursing programme since 2004 and M.Sc. Nursing since 2010 in five specialties namely Medical Surgical Nursing, OBG Nursing, Child Health Nursing, Community Health Nursing and Psychiatry Nursing. The institution also offers Ph.D. programme in nursing as it is a   recognized Research Centre of KUHS since 2019.

Our institution is the second nursing institution in Kerala to get accredited by NAAC with CGPA 2.77(B Grade) in 2016, and the first institution under KUHS to get quality accreditation with A+ grade. The college is the only health care institution in Kerala having membership in the prestigious United Nations Academic Impact (UNAI).

OBJECTIVES

To help the students acquire knowledge of theory and principles from humanities, biological and behavioral sciences to carryout individualistic health care.

To provide quality nursing care to clients at various settings such as hospitals and community and other health care agencies irrespective of religion or caste, particularly the less fortunate.

To promote problem solving and evidence based practice through research activities.

To help students to practice genuine feeling of compassion, indiscrimination and ethical values in their personal, professional life.

To provide over all development of students with special emphasis on intellectual, cultural psychosocial and spiritual aspects.

To motivate and cultivate leadership qualities in the students so that they will assume leadership position in the profession and society helping in developmental activities of health care and society.

OUR PHILOSOPHY

Health Care Philosophy of Bishop Benziger College of Nursing is basically founded on the Christian Doctrine of “To Love is to Serve” – Our inspiration is Christ, the Healer who sent his apostles out to continue the ministry. The management is fully geared to implement this philosophy of caring in the field of health care.

College of nursing believes in rendering quality education in the field of nursing with a view to prepare competent and caring Nurses. Management and the staff do not discriminate any students who approach us for service on the basis of race, caste and status. Any student who is in the need of education in the field of nursing is our guest of honor and is welcome.

FOUNDER PATRON

MOST. REV. DR. STANLEY ROMAN (BISHOP OF QUILON)

Bishop Stanley Roman was ordained as a priest at St. Peter’s Basilica, Rome on 16th December 1966. He served as the Prefect of St. Raphael’s seminary, Kollam for many years. He secured M.A Degree in English language and Literature from University of Kerala. Later he joined Fatima Mata National College, Kollam as lecturer in English as well as college Bursar. He retired from the college after his laudable performance as Principal of the college. Subsequently he was appointed as the first Rector of Carmel Giri Major Seminary, Aluva of the Latin rite. He was nominated as the Bishop of Quilon on 16th Dec 2001.Bishop Stanley Roman took the initiative to establish the College of Nursing in 2004. Thus His Lordship is the founder patron of Bishop Benziger College of Nursing.

COURSE DURATION

Duration of the programme shall be four years. 

6 weeks vacation, including Public holidays(4 weeks), Year Break & Festival Holidays(2weeks) shall be given in each year.

Examination (including preparatory) = 2+2 weeks

Hours available per academic year (42 weeks x 40 hours) = 1680 hours

BBCN Campus

A well equipped nutrition lab with all basic facilities is available. It is well furnished, comprised of large dining table with 26 chairs. 25 students can occupy the lab at a time for working practical. Other facilities available are Refrigerator, hot and cold water dispenser, 68 wall cupboards and a shelf, 5 gas cylinders along with that 17 sinks for washing articles. Charts on health education regarding dietary needs of various health conditions, recommended daily dietary allowance for various age groups are displayed in the lab. Every year nutrition practical,s are conducted for 1st year B.Sc. Nursing students, as per the specification given in university syllabus. The college library is a place for quiet study and reading. Members should strictly follow these rules and regulations. The college library has an open access system. Use books freely, but do not put them on the shelves. Members may please take the help of the librarian whenever they find any difficulty in locating the books. Hostel accommodation is available in the institution premises with well spacious and proper ventilated rooms which will create homely atmosphere and enable the students to have their studies. All the students should adhere to the rules and any violation will be viewed seriously.
