About the Trust
A Bit About Us
Dr.M.V.Shetty, MS,FRCS, FREPS (1917-1976):
Late Dr. M.V. Shetty, MS, FRCS, FRFPS was eminent in several fields ; in his professional field of surgery, in rehabilitation and in the state - run institution of Home Guards. As a surgeon with the 1st private Surgical Specialty Hospital in Dakshina Kannada District, he was also distinguished Professor of Surgery at KMC, Honorary Medical Officer at Government Wenlock Hospital, Director of the Lions Limb Centre and Commandant of the D.K. Home Guards. His dedication earned him the respect of patients, colleagues, fellow doctors, students and the general public. He had the courage of his strong convictions and a humane code of practice to match. At the personal level he was known to have a keen appreciation of music, he played the tabla and young people, his students especially, always responded to his humorous and understanding way of dealing with them.
The Trust established in his name has many firsts to its credit; the first nursing college in the private sector in the state began at BSc. Level progressing to MSc. in 1987; Physiotherapy (first in Karnataka) at BPT level in 1991 progressing to MPT and Ph.D. level; Speech and Hearing at BASLP level in 1991 progressing to MASLP and Ph.D. Radiology at B.Sc. level in 1995, Medical Laboratory Technology at the degree level in 1996. Other courses conducted by the trust are the Diploma in General Nursing from 1993 and a postgraduate degree course, MSW in Social Work in 1999, B.A. in fine arts in 2007, a postgraduate Diploma in Classical Dance in 2010, a B.Ed Programme ,Diploma in medical technology in 2019.
The practice of health care and technological education is changing rapidly and the Trust will remain alert to these changes in the spirit of the tradition shaped by Dr. M.V. Shetty - our inspiration
Dr. M. Ramgopal Shetty
Dr. M. V. Shetty Memorial Trust is managed by the Founder, Dr. M.Ramgopal Shetty, who is the Secretary and Executive Officer of the Trust. Dr. M.R. Shetty has been closely associated with the academic bodies of Mangalore University and Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences since their inception. He was a member of both the Academic Council and Syndicate of Mangalore University for several terms and of the Syndicate of RGUHS and has contributed to the vocationalizing of courses especially in the allied medical field of University education. He founded Dr. M. V. Shetty Memorial Trust and through the Trust he was instrumental in introducing many vocational courses in Nursing, Physiotherapy, Speech and Hearing, Medical Laboratory Technology and Social Work and Education under Mangalore University. Some of these were later transferred to Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences.
He also served as executive member in the Rehabilitation Council of India. Under his able guidance and administration the Trust manages 15 different graduate and post graduate courses in eight different colleges affiliated to Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Bangalore and Mangalore University, Mangaluru . Dr. Shetty had his early education at St. Aloysius High School, Mangalore and went on to complete his graduate and postgraduate professional education in Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore. Later he went to UK on a vascular surgery fellowship. On his return from UK he served as Asst. Professor in Surgery at KMC itself and worked there till 1989.
His surgical specialty unit of Peripheral Vascular Surgery continues to function at Government Wenlock Hospital bringing affordable specialised surgical care to the needier section of society. Under his aegis, the Trust also runs the Blood Bank at Government Wenlock Hospital, the clinical facility of Physiotherapy and the Medical Laboratory at Government Lady Goschen Hospital. The staff are provided round the clock and the facility is free for the needy patients. The clinical facilities of Physiotherapy and Speech and Hearing are also provided free at Dr. MVST Hospital.
This is in keeping with Dr. Shetty's founding vision, which was in turn inspired by his father's work at both professional and community levels. It envisages not only the providing of quality health services and the training of professionals in each of the allied medical fields but also in educating the public and providing affordable diagnostic and therapeutic facilities in collaboration with the Government especially to those in need. It can be said that his contribution has been vital in transforming the paramedical scene in Karnataka State and nationally. He is also expected to craft new directions in the field of fine arts and education programmes instituted by the Trust.

Dr .M.V Shetty College of Nursing established in the year 1987 is the first nursing institute to be started under private sector in the state of Karnataka offering programmes in nursing science aiming to produce qualified nursing professionals who;

​Nursing Courses:​
The different courses in Nursing sciences are B.Sc. Nursing (Basic) was started during the academic year 1987-88, the B.Sc Nursing (Post Certificate) was started during the academic year 1989-90 and the M.Sc. Nursing started during the academic year 1992-93. All these courses were initially affiliated to Mangalore University and subsequently during the academic year 1996-97 all these courses are transferred to Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Bangalore.
All these Courses are recognized by Karnataka Nursing Council and Indian Nursing Council and are affiliated to Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Bangalore.​
