SJM Dental College and Hospital, Chitradurga is one of the prime institutions of SJM Vidyapeetha. It was established in the year 1986 for the purpose of taking professional Health Science Education to the doors of desirous students in Central Karnataka in particular and across the country in general. SJM Vidyapeetha is an offspring of Sri Murugha Math, Chitradurga, which is known for its social service activities on the lines of the socio-economic and cultural practices propagated by the Sharanas of 12th century A.D. At present, it has more than 100 institutions from Kindergarten to Post-Graduation. It includes institutions belonging to Medical, Dental, Pharmacy, Nursing, General Education and others ranging from schools to colleges. Dr.Shivamurthy Murugha Sharanaru is the present pontiff of Sri Murugha Math and by virtue of the same is the President of SJM Vidyapeetha.

SJM Dental College and Hospital is an affiliated college of Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Bangaluru. The program followed in the college is a 4 years BDS course with one year of mandatory rotating internship. The college and the program are recognized by the Dental Council of India. The annual intake of students permitted by the University and approved by the DCI is 60.

Community health care services are conducted on and off the campus. For the purpose of effective implementation of extension activities, the Public Health Dentistry department coordinates with various Government and Non-Government Agencies, including the NSS unit of the college.

The college has sufficient infrastructure as prescribed by RGUHS and DCI. It has been updated and upgraded periodically to keep abreast with the professional and technological developments taking place in the field of dental education and practice of dentistry. ICT has been made use of in teaching, learning and evaluation activities. Office, library and class rooms are equipped with required projectors, smart boards and computers.

The college has separate hostels for boys and girls. Indoor and outdoor facilities are provided with for games and sports, cultural and skill development activities. Canteen and transportation facilities are also provided. Students are encouraged to make use of Wi-Fi facility provided in the campus. HELINET facility is created by the RGUHS for the reference of students and faculty.

The institution has a student support mentoring system. Career planning and placement guidance activities are conducted, besides the personality development programs. Faculty Development Programs are organized for effective students counseling. Remedial Coaching classes are conducted for slow learners and special arrangements are made to motivate the exceptional students to move to further heights. The services of faculty of Department of Psychiatry in BMCH are made use of in this regard.

The institution annually brings out the prospectus for disseminating the information about the college and also brings out a Wall Magazine and an Annual Magazine to give expression to the knowledge and skill of faculty and students. The college has an Alumni association to motivate the prospective practitioners of dentistry. Programs are organized in co-operation with the Indian Dental Association (IDA) to bridge the gap between what is taught in the college and what is needed in the practice. The institution has a clear vision and mission to create globally excellent dentists with humane values. The institution has made arrangements to encourage innovations and best practices in all activities of teaching, learning, evaluation, research, governance etc.

Chitradurga is one of the famous historical centers of Karnataka State. It is Located in the central part of Karnataka. This city is about 200 kms away from the Capital City Bengaluru on National Highway No-4 towards Mumbai. It is a District Head Quarters and connected to Rail & Road routs of all important cities and towns of the Karnataka State. This place is known for historical and archaeological monuments of pre- historic period. The magnificent rocks on Chinmuladri Hills, seven round rock fort built by the famous Palegars who ruled the region during the middle of the last century, the Chadravalli inscription of Kadambas period and Sri Jagadguru Murugharajendra Math have added ancient value to the place.

This beautiful hill-rocks and green city is a place of famous historical, religious and charitable institution - Sri Jagadguru Murugharajendra Brihanmath, which is well known for its Social, Economical and Educational activities not only in Karnataka State but also in other parts of India. This Math inherits the renown culture of sharanas of 12th Century AD Karnataka during which period the famous social, economic and cultural revolution took place under the stewardship of Lord Basaveshwara. These sharanas fought for the cause of untouchables, poor and deprived people to give them a new life which ensured them the equality, liberty and fraternity - the espoused values of today's democracy. Hence, this math has a long history of 9 centuries of social service rendered irrespective of caste, creed and gender inequalities.

SJM VIDYAPEETHA

Sri Jagadguru Murugharajendra Vidyapeetha is an apex body established under Societies Act to organize and manage educational and cultural institutions with an intention to take education to the door steps of common people in rural and remote areas. This was started in the year 1964 by His Holiness Jagadguru Sri Sri Mallikarjuna Murugharajendra Mahaswamiji, the then pontiff of Srimath. The present seer Sri Shivamurthy Murugha Sharanaru is the President of the Vidyapeetha under whose spiritual and administrative guidance about 150 institutions are running today. These institutions include Medical College, Dental College, Engineering College, Nursing College and Schools, Pharmacy College, Polytechnic College, Degree Colleges, High Schools Primary and Nursery Schools, School of Dance, Drama and Music etc..,. Besides, it has number of Hostels and Schools for Physically Challenged and Orphan Children.
